One thing I have always
done in my playing is try to avoid sounding like I am just playing up and down a scale
while soloing. Sometimes this has worked and sometimes it hasnt! :o) Unfortunately
we have to learn our scales in patterns, and then we get those patterns stuck in our heads
(or under our fingers as the case may be). Here is a lick you
can work on to try to stay out of standard patterns. It is still using a pattern of
course, but there are some slides, and string skips involved that make it a bit different.
Always try to use your ear, and your imagination over your finger memory. Anything you can
do that is different and out of the ordinary will help you start to develop chops that are
more musical and less mechanical !!
I am using alternate picking on this, and I have not marked the
fingerings. You will have to work out the best finger combinations. Try to do it as smooth
as possible, and work it up to speed. The audio version is at a medium tempo so you can
hear the slides.
