"LEGEND"

This is the "head" from the song "LEGEND" on my CD "Pawn Shop".

We are about to take a trip to a few different time zones! This riff was actually written by my drummer, and since he wrote it on a keyboard, one of the most challenging things was to try to figure out how to best play the wide intervals on guitar. Nailing wide intervals on the keyboard is simple, you just put one hand over there, and one hand over here, and presto!! Not so on guitar. There is string skipping and all sorts of oddities involved. Not to mention that once I figured it out, we decided to do it about 10 times faster! The final version you here is doubled with a steel drum.

I've written the lick out for you below. You play part 1, then part 2, then part 1 again, and finally part 3. Explaining the time signatures. The first and second parts are in 7/8 and the third part is in 12/16. After much discussion with my drummer, he decided that the first two parts could be called 14/16 as well, but we decided to go with 7/8 because of the feel. (Not to mention it is frightening having to play any music in 14 anything!!!) I suggest using alternate picking throughout, and when you get it down it should sound smooth. The rest of the tune goes back and forth through many different time signatures including 5/4, and a little 4/4 thrown in for good measure. (Sorry, I couldn't resist that).
