| This is the concept of substitute arpeggio
configurations. While Major and minor variations are important, often times the overuse of
these can cause a predictability and staleness in one's playing. One way to avoid falling
into this rut is by substituting arpeggios with a different tonality for their Major/minor
counterparts. A very standard chord change especially in the
world of rock, is Am to F Major. Over this change you could obviously play an A minor and
F Major arpeggio. However, by superimposing Am11 over the Am, and F Maj7/6 over the F
Major, you can create a much more interesting feel! While there are a great number of
arpeggios that may be played over Major/minor changes, listening to the rhythm and context
of the song will best determine if and when a substitution is applicable.
As always, play the following arpeggios slowly and accurately,
gradually working up to "Rip yer head off" speed. And remember, substitution is
in the ear of the beholder! So experiment! |
